Under the burning mid-December sun of 1907, a throng of saltpeter miners, women, and children, all inhabitants of the Pampa Salitrera, set out on the long walk to Iquique, Chile, to demand better work and life conditions, and along the way friendships are forged, lovers are found, and quarrels are fought, but no one could ever have imagined what awaited them once they reached the harbor city.
